Well that didn't take very long did it? Sony Pictures announced today that the studio has greenlit a sequel to The Smurfs and even has a release date set for the film: August 2, 2013. No other films are scheduled for that month yet but I'm guessing if there is a Cowboys & Aliens 2 it will stay far away from that date. There are no further details about the new film as of right now BUT Jordan Kerner will be producing the sequel.
The Smurfs has been a surprise box office hit since its release a couple of weeks ago. After a $35.6M opening weekend, the film held strong throughout its first full week of release and this past weekend brought in another $20M for a domestic total of $78.8M. Overseas the film, which opened in last weekend in 23 markets came in at #1 and the movie has taken in more than $135M to date worldwide.
The first film which was directed by Raja Gosnell, stars Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, Hank Azaria, Anton Yelchin, Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, Fred Armisen, George Lopez, Paul Reubens, John Oliver, Kenan Thompson, B.J. Novak, Jeff Foxworthy, Wolfgang Puck, Gary Basaraba and Tim Gunn.
