Reel Scoop's Most Anticipated Summer Movies

Each year there are Summer Blockbusters that will surely make a splash at the Box Office once they hit theaters and tons of movie sites can't wait to tell you how good those films are going to be. They come out with these Summer Movie Lists displaying each movie and there synopsis and expect you to want to see it based off that (I know because we have done one ourselves). But we thought we'd switch things up this time by not only giving you a quick summary about the films WE actually want to see but telling you why we want to see those movies when they hit cinema screens this summer! So without further ado...

Chris (TRS) Summer Movies Picks:

Super 8 - June 10th

Synopsis: In 1979, after the Air Force closes a section of Area 51, all materials are transported to a secure facility in Ohio. A train carrying some of the materials derails during an accident and something escapes from one of the cargo cars. A group of kids making movies with their Super 8 cameras accidentally capture what escapes on film.

Why I Want To See It: Talk about one of the most intriguing movies of the summer! The trailers for Super 8 really tend to leave everything to the imagination as not to give away to much of the plot or any of the plot for that matter so that alone makes me want to check the film out for myself. J.J. Abrams has a unique way of story telling ever since his Lost days so the one thing you can expect from everything he gets his hands on is -- the unexpected! Super 8 reminds me of Cloverfield, another one of Abrams' creations but in that same vein instead of the hand-held camera method, I'm looking forward to seeing how the Super 8 camera itself plays a part in the film.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon - July 1st

Synopsis: "Transformers 3" features Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) taking his first tenuous steps into adulthood while remaining a reluctant human ally of Optimus Prime. The film centers around the space race between the U.S.S.R. and the USA, suggesting there was a hidden Transformers role in it all that remains one of the planet's most dangerous secrets. The villain of the third film will be Shockwave.

Why I Want To See It: Are you serious? Do you really need an explanation as to why I want to see this film? Yes the last installment of the franchise left most disappointed and wanting Michael Bay's head on a platter but the director admitted his mistakes and really looks to blow us away with this -- the third and final film for Bay and possibly Shia LaBeouf. The earlier trailers left me thinking this would be just another Transformers movie and didn't leave me WANTING to see this movie although I knew I eventually would. Megan Fox getting the heave-ho after appearing in the first two films didn't help matters much either as for eye candy purposes only she was the second best thing about the Transformers films! Then the latest trailer for the third film premiered a little over a week ago and it BLEW MY MIND! It was everything I was looking for in anticipation for this film and now  July 1st can't get here fast enough!

Captain America: The First Avenger - July 22nd

Synopsis: Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy's earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment... Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogerswas at last administered the Super-Solider Serum and bombarded by "vita-rays." Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body asperfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and battle savvy, Captain America has continued hiswar against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and as leader of the Avengers.

Why I Want To See It: Chris Evans, after taking a stab at playing the Human Torch wasn't my first choice to take on the role as the All-American Superhero but he won me over with every trailer I've see for the film. In interviews Chris Evans has done, he really seems like he committed himself to giving us a stellar performance and that's all you can ask for from the actors who take on the roles of our favorite superheroes. Captain America: The First Avenger looks to have a great combination action and adventure as well as great actors like Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving who are sure to get us great performances. Acting is the one component few seem to mention when it comes to superhero flicks but this one looks to have the best cast next to X-Men: First Class as far as it's line up of great actors and actresses. Looking forward to seeing Captain American fight his way onto the scene later this summer!

Nathan (NP) Summer Movie Picks

The Hangover Part II - May 26th

Synopsis: Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don’t always go as planned. A source familiar with the production said the character of the tattoo artist (played by Nick Cassavetes) is "pivotal" to the plot, in which one of the stars gets a tattoo during a night of debauchery.

Why I Want To See It: Like a lot of people, the first movie completely blindsided me. It was a movie full of great characters, quotable one liners and ludicrous plot. For me, Zach Galifianakis' Alan, will go down as one of the best comedy characters of all time, and with each viewing I am still finding new gags. And so now we are on the verge of the Wolfpack reforming, this time in the craziness of Bangkok and I cannot wait. Like Todd Phillips' last release Due Date, The Hangover Part 2 has a big shadow looming over it but I hope the change of venue will allow for a lot of new material and gags and that this isn't just a re-run of the first movie.

The Tree of Life - May 27th

Synopsis: The story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith.

Why I Want To See It: Terrence Malick's long awaited drama is finally on the eve of being released and is due to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Not much is known about this film other than it has surreal and sci-fi elements and that it follows a Texan boy from childhood to his adult years. What is known is that there is major buzz about the film which stars Sean Penn and Brad Pitt. The trailer was stylish and intriguing, whilst the poster almost felt like a piece of art. Expect this to be a major player in next years Oscars.

Cowboys and Aliens - July 29th

Synopsis: Set in 1800s Arizona, a battle between cowboys and Apaches is interrupted by the crash landing of a space ship. The alien commander plans to tame the Old West and enslave everyone, but the cowboys and Native Americans turn their six-guns against the alien invaders.

Why I Want To See It: Since I first saw Swingers, I have been a fan of Jon Favreau and his work on the Iron Man franchise further solidified that. He has shown that he can tackle a big budget movie and handle an ensemble cast of big name actors. That is exactly what he needs for Cowboys and Aliens which features Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. I love a movie with a different and interesting concept and this certainly has that as we see, well -- cowboys battle aliens! This is one of those movies that could easily end up being ridiculous but I am putting my faith in Happy Hogan, James Bond and Han Solo!

Nicolette (NO) Summer Movie Picks

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - May 20th

Synopsis: In the fourth installment of the “Pirates” series, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is back in action as he seeks the mythical Fountain of Youth, with a new set of comrades and foes. Accompanied by Angelica (Penelope Cruz), a fiery con artist, looking to use Jack to get to The Fountain, she tricks him to go aboard the ship of the equally mythical Blackbeard (Ian McShane). On this new adventure, Captain Jack finds himself fighting his way through foreign and dangerous territory, stuck between the wrath of Blackbeard and ruthless Angelica.

Why I want To See It: I have been a fan of these movies since the first installment.  Skeptical of a film based on a ride at Disneyland, I had my doubts, but they were quickly converted into fandom. This series is fun, inventive, and well-done, with the ever-interesting and quirky Captain Jack Sparrow at the helm of a revolving cast. This is a series that could go on forever, with both prequels and sequels, telling the grandiose tales of the Captain’s exploits. It’s also going to be screened in 3D IMAX, the best, and most encapsulating way to watch films these days, which is an added bonus.

The Trip - June 10th

Synopsis: When British actor and comedian Steve Coogan is invited by The Observer to go on a tour of the finest restaurants in the UK, he imagines the perfect romantic getaway with his girlfriend. After she declines, at a loss, he asks his best friend Rob Brydon to accompany him, right away coming to regret the decision.  Together they sample the best foods, take in beautiful sights, and try not to kill each other.

Why I Want To see It: Months before I saw this trailer, I had seen the hilarious dueling Michael Caine impression argument, and by the time I found out there was a movie to go around it, I was sold. In a revival of the long-hackneyed road movie genera, this mocumentary has a simple basis—a food tour, which along the way, emphasizes the back-and-forth camaraderie and constant aggravation brought by the accompaniment of Coogan’s best friend Rob Brydon. The fact that they’re on a mission to review the food goes right out the window, giving way to the increasingly outrageous path the journey takes, and I, for one, cannot wait to go along for the ride to see the full extent of the insanity.

Apollo 18 - August 26th

Synopsis: The official number of NASA’s Apollo moon missions stands at seventeen. Conspiracy theorists, and space travel enthusiasts alike have long speculated about a rumored eighteenth mission that went so horribly wrong, the whole project was deeply buried, the details of which never to be known to the general public. Finally released, this film is the footage taken from that mission, to show the true horror of what really befell the crew of Apollo 18.

Why I Want To See It: In about ten year gaps, films come out that cost very little to make, and are devastatingly terrifying. In the style of ‘The Blair Witch Project’, this film is made to look like footage taken from the astronauts of a fictional mission. Using unknown actors, and a virtual blackout of information gives a since of isolation and realism necessary to keep up the illusion. I've said before and it bears being said again, that I’m a huge Sci-fi nerd, as well as having a lifetime love of space exploration, bordering on obsession. In the early and disorienting stages of this film’s campaign, it has piqued my interest, and I’m eagerly anticipating it, and hoping it can be all that I've already made it up to be in my mind. This is an excellent, inventive idea, that I am very much looking forward to.

Lee (LN) Summer Movie Picks

X-Men: First Class - June 3rd

Synopsis: The film, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.

Why I Want To See It: Since I was a young lad, I have loved the X-Men, from the comics, to the awesome animated series, to the very well-done X-Men films, there has been something about the characterization that I have enjoyed learning about. Outcasts, normal people trying to fit in, who at first regret having these abilities, but who over time learn to deal with them. So for me, my own anticipation for X-Men First Class is very high. A chance to see how it all began, to see these beloved characters from the start is something I really cant wait to see, in affect, the birth of the X-Men, and for a die-hard X-Men fan, that is something that will be so exciting to witness.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part II - July 15th

Synopsis: The final adventure of Harry Potter as he attempts to bring an end to his nemesis, Lord Voldemort.

Why I Want To See It: I must admit, I was a late fan to the world of Harry Potter. It wasnt until the fourth film was released that I decided to watch the first three in one day to get prepared to see the fourth one at the pics the next day. And I fell in love with them from the outset. I was mad with myself for not 'finding' them sooner and after seeing the Order of the Pheonix, I couldnt wait for the next one. Fast forward a few years and here we are, about to see the final Harry Potter movie. It has been one hell of a journey, fun, exciting and at times sad. No doubt I will be a bag of mixed emotions before, during and after but it is a franchise that I would happily watch over and over again.

Final Destination 5 - August 12th

Synopsis: Twelve years after explosion of Flight 180, eleven years after the pile- up Route 23, six years after the derailment of the Devil's Flight roller coaster and two years after the McKinley Speedway racetrack accident, Sam Lawton (Nicholas D'Agosto) has a premonition about the bridge he is on collapsing, killing him and many around him. As the vision becomes reality, Sam manages to save himself and a few others; however, Sam and his girlfriend Molly (Emma Bell), discover that Death is still after them and the ones who survived the gruesome accident.

Why I Want To See It: As a fan of the horror/slasher/suspense genre, the Final Destination movies have been a fan-boys wet dream. It was something, at the time, that was new and original and exciting. A group of young hot people who cheat death, and in return, Death dispatches them off one by one in the most fun, inventive, gory ways possible. More horror-comedy than horror-slasher, these are fun and so very entertaining. And after Final Four in 3D which breathed fresh life into the franchise, I cant wait to see what new ways the creators have came up with to kill off Deaths victims.

So there you have it. Those are the movies we're looking forward to seeing this summer among many, many others. Below you can find a full list of films set for release this summer! Which movies are YOU looking forward to seeing?
