Box Office Scoop: REAL STEEL Tops The Friday Standings


The robot boxing flick REAL STEEL knocked out all comers as the Shawn Levy-directed film topped the standings on Friday with the George Clooney-directed political thriller THE IDES OF MARCH coming in second. Holdover DOLPHIN TALE continues to impress coming in third.

REAL STEEL claims first place at Friday's box office with an estimated take of $8.5M which is the second best Friday opening for a boxing film believe it or not right behind the Will Smith-starrer ALI which grossed $10.2M on Christmas Day. REAL STEEL, which stars Hugh Jackman and Evangeline Lilly is on pace for an opening just north of $25M.

In second place is the the political thriller THE IDES OF MARCH which managed to bring in an estimated $3.4M, which puts the film on pace to gross somewhere in the neighborhood of $10M. In third place is last weekend number one film, DOLPHIN TALE which grossed an estimated $2.4M (down 31 percent) for a 15-day total of $42.3M. MONEYBALL wasn't far behind with $2.23M (42 percent drop), for a total of $44M, placing fourth.

50/50 takes the number five spot with an estimated gross of $1.78M, bringing its eight-day total to $13.6M. Meanwhile, last weekend's box office surprise, COURAGEOUS dropped 55 percent to $1.4M, for an eight-day total of $12.7M.


Last and certainly least, DREAM HOUSE plummeted 53 percent to $1.36M, while WHAT'S YOUR NUMBER? fell 50 percent to $1M. Through eight days the movies have collected $11.4M and $8.3M, respectively.
